Another of Tom's shots from the Bay of Green Bay. On the northeast side of the city is a small amusement park that has been there since before I was a kid. It's called Bay Beach and the most expensive ride is 50 Cents.

This ride is the big slide and it's about 100 feet high. You slide down on a burlap sack and be sure not to touch any bare skin while speeding down ... the heat and friction will burn it right off. My favorite ride will forever be the Bumper Cars ... they are almost as much fun today as they were back then.

Another photo from the Fox River Trail. At this point the trail cuts through someone's backyard. Obviously this person cares for the dogs that run and walk down this trail daily. I saw at least four dogs on the trail that afternoon. I'm sure it's appreciated on a hot day.

This must have been a butterfly that was auctioned from a past season of the Einstein Project. It's currently on a private dock somewhere along the Fox River Trail. It looks a little weathered but still caught my eye right away. I could not figure out the real name of this butterfly, so I called it Anonymous.

Nicolet National Bank

The Nicolet National Bank building in downtown Green Bay and borders the east side of the fox river. This building is new enough (2004ish) that I consider it to be part of the downtown revitalization project. The building is right across the street, just north, from the Bellin Building. A Sushi Bridge

My family went out to the sushi restaurant they enjoy best, Little Tokyo, and had a bridge of sushi. Everything looked as was very good. You'll notice I said "they", because I don't like any sushi restaurant, because I don't like sushi. Yes, I've tried it, at my friend's favorite sushi place ... in Japan ... so it was good ... lets just say I'm a picky eater and leave it at that. The proprietor makes me an excellent chicken cutlet with rice.

I took this photo earlier this summer while taking photos of the Canada Goose that hang out and eat the fallen apples.

If Detective Charlie Crews from the tv show Life was around, I'd say it was probably he'd have picked it. Also if you need something to watch consider renting the first season of Life ... I really enjoyed that show.

Today, we're on top of the bridge connecting East and West De Pere. De Pere is a suburb just south of Green Bay. The bridge is the Claude Allouez Bridge and it opened in October of 2007.

A semi-artsy photo today. I took this under the State Highway 172 bridge from the east side of the Fox River. The Fox River Trail is nice paved trail along the river on the east side that goes from downtown Green Bay to De Pere (and then to Greenleaf).

Also, the river looks a lot shallower at this point.

St. Norbert's Scored Shortly Afterwards

You can't really from this picture but in addition to the goalie stick on the ice in the foreground, the Foresters goalie also lost his blocker pad at the same time he lost the goalie stick. So it was just a matter of time until the Green Knights scored their fourth goal.

The St. Norbert College Green Knights took on the Lake Forest College Foresters at the Cornerstone Community Center tonight in a meeting of old division rivals and travel partners. Lake Forest recently switched conferences to the MCHA and it has really changed the schedule for the Knights this year. I'm sure you'll see some more pictures as the season goes on.

Admirals Goal!

First off, I have to apologize to Karl for this photo. First off I'm encroaching on his territory, Milwaukee Daily Photo and one of his favorite subjects, hockey. He was at the game as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if he has photos from this game on his blog.

This photo is from the Milwaukee Admirals home opener at the Bradely Center in Milwaukee on Friday. This is a photo of the game winning, power play, overtime goal by Center, Ben Guite. Ben was recently demoted to the Admirals from their NHL affliate, Nashville Predators, but he was golden in OT. Ben Eaves fired a shot on goal and Guite buried the rebound five hole (currently hidden in the goalie's pads).

Fort Howard Guardhouse Side View

This is the side view of the guardhouse. You can tell where the add on have been made. I think it would have been cool to own a house that was at one time the guardhouse for Fort Howard. Zachary Taylor must have spent some time there as well.

Local news reports that the guardhouse will be restored at Heritage Hill at a cost of around $300,000 and an educational program will be developed around it.

Condemned Building

This condemned building (from 1833) is more than that. Amazingly it's a piece of history.

Part of this building is the original guardhouse of Fort Howard (Run for a time by Zachary Taylor). Apparently it's been moved once, but it's still in the Fort Howard area of Green Bay. The city issued a Raze or Repair Order in December in 2008. Since then the city has decided to remove the building (for $20,000) and turn it over to Heritage Hill Historical Site. Heritage Hill has a few other of Fort Howard's original buildings so I'm sure the building will feel right at home.

The S and S Coach Company (Sayers and Scoville) was founded in 1876 and according to their history they are the only preautomotive funeral coach company in continuous business. This particular coach looks like a late 1930's Cadillac and it's very ornate. A very nice restoration.

S & S Hearse - Side View

It must be getting closer to Halloween as there is a really old and ornate hearse parked in front of the Historical Hazelwood House Museum. The museum is located south of downtown along the east bank of the Fox River in the Astor Historic District.

This district is one of Green Bay's great old neighborhoods. In this case it's the neighborhood with the really large, well maintained old houses, some with spanish tiled roofs. Every bigger city worth it's salt has one of these neighborhoods. I'm lucky enough to drive through this neighborhood every morning on my way to work and admire the houses.

Bertrand's Sporting Goods

Just north of the old west side downtown in a slowly decaying neighborhood. Bertrand's reminds me of those neighborhood hardware stores where they can tell you exactly what you need for the job at hand. It is hands down the best sporting goods store in Green Bay.

Looking for a kayak roof rack earlier this year they were not only extremely helpful, they put it together for me and installed it on my car.

Some of the big sporting goods stores in town had equivalent systems but couldn't really tell me anything about it ... despite having 30 kayaks (and much more other related equipment) tied down in various spots throughout the store.

My favorite visit to one of the large stores was when one employee claimed not to sell roof racks, all the while he was leaning against the display stand with the same equipment, I wound up purchasing at Bertrand's.

Meyer Theatre - Side View

Here is the side view of the Meyer Theatre. You can also make out Caffe' Espresso and it's awning in the foreground. I like the restaurant but for some reason just don't go there very much. I'll have to get it back in my rotation.

A quick aside there used to be an alternative music club in the building where the Meyer is housed. I think they called it Club 219 and it's entrace was from Walnut Street, not Washington. The Club seemed to come and go but definitely was gone for good around 1999. It was located back stage of the Meyer ... I remember seeing all the equipment that still ran the curtains back there. They had small dance floors on those risers and two small bars near the entrance, which was probably a back stage entrance for the Meyer before being refurbished.

Meyer Theatre

Sure, I owe you a better photo of the recently refurbished Meyer Theatre. It wasn't my fault the minivan was in the way.

Music, Comedy and Theatre all happen here again on a regular basis.

This theatre opened on Valentine's Day in 1930 as the Fox Theatre. As far as I know the name had nothing to do with the nearby river, Fox was just a Theatre company like Marcus is today. Hard times hit with the Great Depression and the theatre closed in 1933. It reopened as the Bay Theatre and survived until 1978, when it closed and then reopened as a triplex. The theatre closed again in 1998. Betty Meyer provided an endowment that helped reopen the theatre in 2000 and it's had audiences ever since. Even the original pipe organ has been restored and returned to it's rightful place.

The last bands I've seen there were Solas and Bohola (irish bands) one night and Todd Snider (alt-country or y'allternative) not long after.

Still Waters Run Deep Again

It is Boss's Day today and I figured this picture would be most appropriate for my deceased Boss. Give me a moment and I'll try to wrap it all together. The first is the "Silent Waters Run Deep" post I ran earlier this year. The second is the bridge in the background is commonly known as the Mason Street Bridge. The bridge is really the Donald A. Tilleman Bridge and Donald A. Tilleman was the boss (mayor) of the city of Green Bay from 1965 - 1972. See, I told you I'd wrap it all together.

Old Rough and Ready

This monument is in Leicht Memorial Park just north of Dousman/Main St on the just on the west side of the Fox River. Mr. Taylor served three years in Green Bay as Commandant of Fort Howard. I didn't know there had ever been a President that had ever spent any appreciable amount of time in Wisconsin, let alone Green Bay.

Al's Hamburger

Al's Hamburger might be the greasiest burger joint I've ever been in. The last time I was there the air is a mixture of cigarette smoke and dissolved grease than anything resembling oxygen. I guess it could have changed, I haven't indulged in years. If you go during work hours you almost need a shower before returning to work at an office. That said, the food is exactly what you'd expect ... greasy goodness.

The Bellin Building

This is the "skyscraper" built by Dr. Julius Bellin from 1912 - 1915 as rental space for medical professionals. The Bellin Building was originally seven stories and the top two stories were added in 1924.

The building was recently purchased by a new investment group and the restaurant, The Black and Tan Grille, has recently opened on the bottom floor. The menu looks quite good, but more than I would usually (or unusually) pay for lunch or dinner.

According to the Einstein Project site the painting symbolizes the Oneida creation story. Both of the painters are creators themselves ... one a children's book author and illustrator and the other barely more than a child at age 13. Thank you both for your work.

This one was painted by Stephanie Stevens and Jessica House and sponsored by the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin. They are the biggest local indian tribe and run the casinos in town and by the airport.

For Tony: Still Waters Run Deep

I know this happens to many people every day, but today it another good person's turn. I lost a good friend and the best boss I've ever had. It's a sad day for me and many other people. I had a chance to thank him and thankfully I did or today I don't think I'd be able to forgive myself. He was a good man and because of that he was able to be a great man ... because given that chance to make a difference, he always took it.

I chose the title today, because that's how I heard a coworker describe him today and it was accurate ... except that he wasn't quiet ... just calm under pressure. The second reason I chose it was because it is an idiom and we work with many english as a second language people and he liked to explain idioms to these people. It just fits.

He'll be missed by me and many others.
